Lesson 1 & 2
Foundations of VisMO 

  • Establish the mindset of observing and analyzing visual-spatial information

  • Learn a brief history of origami and explore the spatial secrets in folding

  • Introduce students to origami symbols and how to interpret a diagram.

  • Fold single paper origami models.

Lesson 3 & 4
The Spatial Thinking Process

  • Begin to engage in the 3i spatial thinking process

  • Discover the mysteries of the magazine box

  • Learn spatial vocabulary associated with location, direction, and orientation  

  • Collaborate with peers on crease pattern exploration and 2D to 3D Transformation.

Lesson 5 & 6
Discovering Spatial Relations with Color and Pattern

  • Create a traditional masu box

  • Try out different color combinations and patterns

  • Engage in describing the spatial relations between parts of an object.

Lesson 7 & 8
Exploring Spatial Relations with Size and Shape

  • Design a masu box lid 

  • Experience an exchange of ideas with your peers as you go through the design process.. ​

  • Engage in describing the spatial relations between separate objects

  • Explore varied possibilities with different sized and shaped paper.

Lesson 9 & 10 Folding Cutting and Reflectional symmetry

  • Learn about reflection and reflectional symmetry

  • Cut, fold and visualize shapes with the 3i process

  • Transform and visualize 2D shapes through reflection

Lesson 11
Creating spatial relations by putting, cutting and folding together

  • Construct a model of your own design

  • Document your design process

  • Create a script or storyboard for a tutorial video of your design

Lesson 12
Field Trip

  • Visit the University of San Diego and tour our VisMO lab.

  • Meet with undergraduate students enrolled in STEAM majors. 

  • Film, edit and share the tutorial video of your design at the innovation classroom.
